Next long race - Rucky Chucky 50K

I ran across this trail ultra marathon on the web. It's just down the road in Auburn. My longest race is only 26.2 miles, but I've felt good enough to keep going (particularly at San Francisco). The race is March 20th. I'll start increasing miles in January.

50K is a long ways, 31 miles, so I'll probably get some new trail shoes. I have my eye on two options. The Rucky Chucky (North Face) or the Structure Triax 13 Trail (Nike). The Rucky Chucky is named after this run. Sounds fitting. I'll try both of these on in December and make a selection in January.

RUNSFM!

What an amazing experience! Running 26.2 miles all over SF allowed me to see all the sights on completely open roads. The traffic was blocked off everywhere on the course including some of the biggies like Embarcadero, the Golden Gate bridge, the entire park and even Haight street.

The starting line was at Embarcadero and Mission. With 20,000 people entered in the mix of full and two half marathons and a 5K, there were people everywhere! My start time was 6:45 (wave 8), but I arrived early and snuck into wave 7.

I was fortunate enough to find a hotel .8 miles from the start. Just enough walking to warm up and not too far to walk back after the race.

The course started along Embarcadero with views of the piers, Alcatraz Island and Fishersman Wharf.

My goal was to finish in 4 hours, which would require a 9 minute mile average. I knew I had an uphill battle when the sea of people restricted my first few miles to a 11 minute pace. The photographers were taking pictures a few yards from the starting line and everyone slowed down raising their hands for the photo op.

The early fog helped keep it cool and first half of the marathon remained packed with people. Some of the road, trail and hills narrowed concentrating the people, making it harder to stay on pace. I was zig-zagging to pass people all over the place. Starting in the 7th wave, I must have passed hundreds of people (Ron would have been proud to see such a kill stat).

Running across the Golden Gate Bridge was amazingly cool (literally and figuratively). Runners were stopping (and some cases not) to take pictures. Having the Golden Gate Park to ourselves was also cool.

The hills were challenging. And there were many of them. But each time I reached the bottom looking up at the task at hand, I’d just say “what would Matthew do?” And that would give me the kick to get up the hill quickly. The SF hills aren’t quite as challenging as the Chicken run or Kingsburg Grade; my local running prepared me well!

I’ve never been to Haight Asbury, so that was a treat too. Running down Haight Street with the road closed was a weird sight with all the colorful store fronts and odd sells. Just past Haight, the marathon folks would change the course to keep car traffic moving. I was right at the beginning of one of these changes. I ended up leading the pack down 16th Street. It felt weird running down 16th by myself (or at least it felt like by myself since I was out ahead of the group).

At this point the crowd was thinning out and I was feeling good. I averaged 10 minute miles for the first 7.6 miles and was about 14 minutes off my 4 hour goal. The second half I felt good enough to shave 4 minutes off that time. I ended up finishing in 4 hours and 10 minutes (9:34 pace). My fastest marathon to date, I felt like I could have done better. I’ll need to try a course with fewer hills and fewer people!

This run ranks up there as one of my best and most enjoyable. The views and challenging terrain were incredible. My running is progressing well enough now; I can’t wait to try either Fresno or Sacramento this winter.

Heading to San Francisco!

Tomorrow I make my way to San Francisco and my third Marathon in 2009. My hopes are high for a PB, but the hilly terrain and foggy weather may provide some obstacles. I've put in the training and feel good.

The course looks amazing. A site-seeing trip on foot! Fisher’s Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, China Town, the entire park, Giants stadium and downtown.

RTO

Just completed the Reno Tahoe Odyssey. RTO is 178 mile, 12 person relay race from Reno, through Truckee, around Tahoe, down to Carson City, through Virgina City and back to Reno. I ran three legs that totaled 18 miles and averaged 8 minute miles. Our team completed the 178 miles in 24 hours and 30 minutes.

Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon!

Another PB. Third in three weeks. Seem to be on a roll. OKC Marathon 4:31:01.

3rd in 40-49!

Another PB, two in two weeks. This one at the Scheels Hop-A-Long 5k in Sparks. I love this course, nice and flat. I finished with 22:02, just three seconds shy of beating 22 minutes. I got a cool medal for finishing 3rd in the 40-49 year old age category. And I won some socks in the drawing after. Not a bad morning.

New half marathon personal best

Even with the hills and wind slowing me down, I still PBed at the Fernley half marathon today. 1:55:27 at a 8:47 pace. This was just under twenty minutes faster than my last half marathon personal best. Feels good leading up to the Oklahoma City marathon in two weeks.

700!

700 miles on Nike plus. I started recording the end of August 2008. Many local races, 5k and 10ks, a couple half marathons and one full marathon later and I have 700 miles.

I may have stopped blogging after every run, but I haven't stopped running. I now record all my runs on the Runner's World training log website.

Moving on...

I'm gonna try putting my run stats on the Runner's World running logs. Should be an easier way to track my shoe mileage.

2 miles on the treadmill

I got all dressed and ready for a quick, two mile run outside and noticed the wind and chickened out. Ran the two miles on my treadmill at a 9:27 pace. Ankle hurt and knees a tiny bit tight, but the pace felt good, in the mid 8 minute range for 3/4 of the run. Nike Marathoners.

Sparks Marina 14 miles

Back at the 2 mile loop around the Sparks Marina. I really like this path. Nice views of the lake, birds and my car and bathrooms are always close at hand. I usually make a couple extended laps around the Scheels store parking lot and side roads. Today's run of 14 miles averaged 10:10 minute mile pace, my fastest 14 miles to date. My knees sure felt tight and sore. Speaking of tight, I had to look odd out there with my full tights, head to toe. Nike Zoom Triax Structure 11s.

Treadmill 5.0

5 mile treadmill run at a 10:23 pace overall. Slow first and last mile and miles 2, 3, 4 at about 9:30 pace. Knees felt a little pain at first but warmed up OK. Nike Zoom Triax Structure 11s.

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

4 mile neighborhood run

9:29 minute mile pace on the streets around the house. Pace felt good and legs performed well. Nike Zoom Triax Structure 11s.

12 miles @ 9:52

12 mile run at the Sparks Marina. First half at 9 minute miles, second about 11. My knees started feeling tight, but overall, I'm very happy with the pace. A little windy and cool. Nike Zoom Triax Structure 11s.

Five miles at 12:14 pace

My right knee is very tight and worrying me. Seems like it's always something... and I'm not even running that fast! First four miles at about 10 minute pace and the last mile I walked. Geez, doesn't this get any easier? Didn't help I was still full from dinner. Ran on the home treadmill in my new Nike Air Zoom Triax Structure 11s.

First run with new shoes!

Ah, I love the feeling of new shoes. Ran a short, slow 5 miles to feel out the legs after last Sunday's hilly 10k. I ran at South Reno Athletic Club with my new Nike Air Zoom Triax Structure 11s. Long name, but nice shoes. Good support and cushioning. Size 13s which seem to help my toes, but a little tighter on the width than my Nike Air Max Moto 6s. They feel snugger without losing the toe space. Good deal! 5 miles at 11:20 pace. :08 slower than I was supposed to, however I had a slow couple of laps to read some email.

You gotta be crazy!

Well, the race lived up to it's name. It was cold, windy and blowing snow. The weather didn't impact me as much as the one hill at the beginning of each of the two "laps" to complete the 10k. My 5k split time was 28 minutes and finished the 10k at 55:34 (8:58 pace). Much better pace than my recent Marathon, but slower than I wanted to. The "you gotta be crazy run" was put on by the Silver State Striders run club, started at the Verdi elementary school and traveled through Verdi, NV. This was my first time visiting Verdi. It was a nice little town.

Getting better

The lingering effects of the marathon are beginning to wear off. Ran 5 miles on my treadmill at a 10:04 pace. Felt much better. I think I'll push the pace a bit more at the "you gotta be crazy run" 10k this Sunday. Nike Air Max Moto 6.

Starting from scratch

After a week off from running, I'm doing a slow reentry. Three short, slow runs this week only totally about 8 miles and running in the 12 minute pace zone. My legs, particularly knees, felt tight and sore. Now I'm feeling better and look forward to this weekend's 10k in Verdi (the aptly named; you gotta be crazy run).

First Marathon!

Huntington Beach! Great course, great weather, great people. Awesome event! I started on track with my running plan. I ran a 10 minute mile until mile 20, then developed a blister on my right big toe and my knees started hurting. I slowed up and finished with a 11:10 pace at 4:52:26. Slower than I wanted, but I learned a lot about those last 6 miles. I haven't been over 20 miles but one time before (only to 24.5). I need to further develop the muscles that support my knees and work on my speed. I got a sweet medal and technical shirt and many great memories.

On to Oklahoma City in April!

On my way...

...up tomorrow at 4:30am to fly to SoCal. Long travel for a long run. Sunday is my first Marathon. Huntington Beach should be a great place to run my first. Surf City Marathon is the name. 18,000 people. Should be crazy.

Still sick

Another slow three miles just trying to get rid of this dang head cold. I'm trying not to make it worse, so I'm taking it easy. On the treadmill with Nike Air Max Moto 6s. 12:51 pace.

My first Marathon is this Sunday. I hope this sick week doesn't hurt my energy level and conditioning. Time will tell.

Monday, January 26, 2009

Yoga today

Now that I'm tapering, my legs felt well enough to do some serious yoga. Today I went back to Laura's "power yoga" class for some crazy stretching!

Sunday, January 25, 2009

Another slow, sick three miles

Pacing myself trying to finish out this head cold and not get sicker before this Sunday's Huntington Beach Marathon, I ran another three miles on my treadmill. Nike Marathoners, 11:36 pace.

500 miles on Nike +

The last three miles to make 500 were slow and somewhat sickly, but I made it. Ran another three miles on my treadmill at a 12:08 pace just to make the 500. Shoes: Nike Marathoners.

I hope this cold doesn't impact my energy for next Sunday's Marathon.

Feeling better 2 miler, sort of

After being sick for a couple days, I ran a short, slow 2 miles on my treadmill. Only 12:06 pace and felt a little dizzy. Good news is the break made my legs feel very rested. Good feeling! Shoes: Nike Marathoner.

Short three miler

Inside track run at South Reno Athletic Club. 10:31 min mile pace. Nike Marathoner shoes.

Sunday, January 18, 2009

Hilly ten mile run

A hilly neighborhood street run today. Beautiful, sunny day. Around 45 degrees. Ran fast downhill and slower uphill (stating the obvious). 10 miles. 10:17 pace. Nike Air Max Moto 6s. 7.7 miles to 500!

Friday, January 16, 2009

Another 5 miles @ South Reno Athletic Club

Slow first mile, quicker second and then busted out some 7 min mile sprints until the last mile cool-down. Felt good, felt fast. Nike Marathoners. 10:09 pace overall. And only 19 miles to go!

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

5 mile indoor run

Ran a 5 miler at South Reno Athletic Club tonight. Slow mile, a couple intervals and a slow mile finish. Nike Marathoners. 10:21 overall pace. 24 miles until 500!

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

28 miles to go...

...until 500 miles on Nike +

Can't wait to get the shirt!

Slow 3 miles today

Slow little run on my treadmill tonight just checking the legs after Sunday's 13.1 mile run. Tight at first, feel pretty good after. 13:43 pace. Nike Air Max Moto 6s.

Monday, January 12, 2009

Half Marathon while tapering

Nice little 13.1 miles on my way towards the February 1st Marathon. Sure felt nice after 24.5, 20 and 18 miles the last three weekends. Ran in my Lunaracers. Legs felt good. 10:55 pace.

Nike Run Club, part 2

Now I've run with the Nike Run Club in Chicago and San Diego. Not quite the same experience, maybe 10 people in San Diego compared to Chicago's 50. But fun regardless. We all ran three miles in the dark (6pm start time). Used my Nike Air Max Moto 6s. I did get a serious tightening in my right calf and upper Achilles tendon. Not sure if that was from swelling after my flight or signs of something more serious to come. I'll rest Thursday and ice for a couple days.

Heading to San Diego

I'm in San Jose, California waiting for my next flight to San Diego. Tonight I hope to join the San Diego Nike store's weekly run club. I happened upon the Chicago version of run club last fall, right before the Chicago Marathon, and ran 7 miles. This time, with some advanced planning, I found that the San Diego store does the same thing. I'll try not to spend too much money. I'll probably only attempt 3 miles. I'm still worn from the 24.5 miles last Sunday.

Sunday, January 4, 2009

I'm spent!

24.5 miles. My new longest run to date. This is my longest run prior to tapering for the Huntington Beach Marathon. I started out slow to conserve energy and ended with a slow pace with worn out knees and ankles. Oh well.

Regardless, this was one long, fulfilling run. I'm tired, but proud to finish the longest run. The after-run massage was nice too. Now I get to run less! Tapering is awesome!

11:11 pace in the Nike Air Max Moto 6s.

New Year run

I thought it would be appropriate to start a year full of running goals with an actual run. I ran a leisurely 5 miles (10:43 pace) around the streets in my area. I'm still nursing a bum toenail on my right big toe, so I continue to take it easy. I took my new Nike Max Air Moto 6s for their first run. Stopped for a Vitamin Water too. Good times.
